Could just do the clear lake trail from uncle toms but then you would miss a nice view of Hayden valley - really was amazing to see how vast it is! I've done this hike a few times and recommend the side trip to Ribbon Lake is worth the extra few miles; if you've seen Silver Cord Cascade (1,200' and Yellowstone's tallest falls) from the north side of the canyon, it actually comes directly from Ribbon Lake.
